Reading is a vital element of a student's academic success and future. Every student is required to read 30 minutes a day/night, 7 days a week. They are expected to read 25 books by the end of the school year.
Semester 2 Curriculum
- Vocabulary: Greek and Latin Roots/ Affixes

Weekly Reading Logs
Students are expected to complete a weekly reading log. The reading log focuses on using cognitive strategies while reading.

Reading Log Requirements
- The reading log is due every Wednesday. Student's will also receive a new one the same day.
- They are to fill it out every night after reading 30 minutes and return it to school everyday. They will lose points if they do not have it with them at school.
- Student's can make up days they missed for that week only. However, it is still due on the due date.
- Late reading logs will not be accepted . Students who are absent are still expected to read. Your child will read with me at snack or after school to make up the missed days. Parent/guardian will be notified if this is the case.
- The reading log is to be signed by a parent/guardian nightly.
Grading Policy
Categories
Late Work
- Reading 35%: Independent Reading (25 books), Reading Logs and Groups, Novel Study, Text Analysis
- Writing 35%: Essays, narratives, assessments, summaries, quickwrites
- Vocabulary 15%: Greek and Latin Roots, academic and content vocabulary
- Speaking and Listening 15%: Discussions, presentations, participation, reading and writing groups
Late Work
- Students have 7 days from the assignment due date to make up an assignment for partial credit. After the 7 days, the assignment cannot be made up. See above for reading log policy
- A student who is absent has as many days as they are absent to make up the work for full credit.
